FAST Travel Meet Fun!

More than 80 swimmers traveled to Albuquerque in June for the FAST travel meet. The team is pictured at 10,300 feet on the top of Sandia Peak after riding the world's longest aerial tramway! Many thanks to the coaches, chaperones, and Jan Hopkins for making the trip a huge success!

Welcome to our newest coach!

FAST has just hired a new assistant coach. Evan Welting comes to us from the Greenwood Athletic Club Tiger Sharks where he has been an assistant for the past two seasons.

Evan will assist Bill with the Senior group, coach the Blue group when Tasha can't be there, start our masters program, and start our new High School group. He will also handle our meet entries.

Evan grew up swimming for the Lakeside Swim Club in Louisville, KY. Mary Meagher (madam butterfly) swam for Lakeside. Evan was a Jr. College 400 IM national champion and academic All American. He finished his college swimming career at Western Kentucky where he was captain and school record holder in the 400 IM.

Evan has had extensive coaching experience at all levels including masters. Before moving to Denver, Evan was an age-group coach for the nationally recognized Swim Atlanta.

We are truly excited to have Evan join us at FAST!

Attention New Swimmers

Announcing FAST Team Tryouts
 Saturday, September 13
at EPIC (1801 Riverside Avenue)

Swimmers 6 to 8 years old: 1-2 p.m.

Swimmers 9 and older: 2-3 p.m.

For 2008-2009, group sizes on FAST will be limited due to available lane space. We are hosting try-outs for all swimmers who did not swim with FAST during the 2007-2008 short course or long course seasons. Swimmers will be challenged to help determine skill level for group placement and readiness.

Swimmers selected from tryouts are eligible for a two-week free trial session. After the trial session, swimmers choosing to join FAST must register for the team by October 1, 2008. Please be sure to review team information including, but not limited to meet support, practice groups, and practice schedule. In addition to attending practices, a commitment to FAST means working at meets hosted by FAST (meet support) and attending meets. (Note: 2008-2009 registration information, fees, and terms and conditions are available on the Registration page.)

Swimmers who are unable to participate in the trial session will be placed on a waiting list until space is available. Swimmers who do not make the trial session after tryouts are encouraged to continue with swimming lessons to improve and keep up their swimming skills.

Basic requirements for tryouts:

  • At least six years old
  • Passed Level V Red Cross Swimming Lessons or the equivalent, including:
    1. 50 yards of continuous freestyle with side breathing
    2. 50 yards of continuous backstroke
    3. 25 yards of basic breaststroke
    4. 25 yards of basic butterfly
    5. Shallow dive
    6. Freestyle flip turn or forward summersault

Additional information:

  • Swimmers need to bring goggles.
  • Swimmers with long hair should wear a swim cap.
  • Boys should not wear baggy swim trunks.
  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to sign up in the pool lobby.
  • Follow up session Tuesday, Sept. 16th 5:30p.m. at EPIC if needed.

We hope to see you at EPIC on September 13th. Until then, please keep your swimmer swimming some and enjoy the Olympics. Go USA!
